Ray (Ray Ray) Young: Bay Area-Based Performer, Director, and Playwright

BIO

As detailed in my artist resume included with my portfolio, I have been involved in theater in the Bay Area for over 10 years. I have written, directed, performed, and been involved behind the scenes as a production assistant and a digital production assistant. I have worked at several different theaters including Eastside Arts Alliance, CounterPulse, SOMArts, SAFEhouse Arts, 447 Minna, Eclectic Box, and Brava Theater. I have worked with prominent Bay Area artists and producers including Nkeiruka Oruche, Vanessa Lewis, Lisa Evans, and Devi Peacock. I am currently employed as a professional performer, director, and playwright 25 weekends a year creating short plays for the ongoing, ever-changing production of The Infinite Wrench with the San Francisco Neo-Futurist ensemble.

Why are you participating in the Lit From The Black! 2024 fellowship

I believe that theater is an essential part of life and that design and technical work are essential parts of theater. I had a wonderful experience participating in LFTB in 2020/2021, but as you know, we were not able to do any hands-on work in a professional theater environment due to the covid pandemic. I would love to have the opportunity to get hands-on experience. I have been living and breathing theater 25 weekends a year writing, performing, and directing. This would be a great addition to my life and would help me to have an avenue towards earning additional income with creative work. I have personally experienced how important theater technicians are to bringing an artistic vision to life and I would be honored to have the skills to be able to do this work on a professional level. I have the technical aptitude necessary to learn and the drive and passion to follow through.

“I have personally experienced how important theater technicians are to bringing an artistic vision to life” - Ray Ray Young.
