Why are you participating in the Lit From The Black! 2024 fellowship

When I was in college, we were required to take two semesters of theatre production classes. To be completely honest, I thought it was a waste of time because I was there to perform! However, the requisite to receive my Bachelors said otherwise. So I begrudgingly took lighting and saved costuming for the latter half of the year. I acquired some skills and was eventually given the task of being a follow spot operator. Despite leaking light onto the audience during a performance, I passed the class with a good grade and buried the information in the deep recesses of my mind hoping to never call on those skills again. It worked. The only light that I can vaguely remember is ellipsoidal and don’t ask me what it does. Life has shown me that true artistry is embracing its multifaceted, ever evolving and expansive nature. I humbly ask for the opportunity to redeem myself as the young adult version didn’t have the capacity of artistic stewardship. Participating in “Lit from the Black” will be a second chance to become a more nuanced multi-hyphenate who will be an embodiment of authentic craftsmanship.

“I work hard and truly desire to enhance my craft! ” - Elizabeth Jones
